For research purposes, of course, I decided to continue down this rabbit hole that started with the Gameboys series (that I am still emotionally recovering from) 😊 And I have found several amazing Filipino groups and artists that have officially been added to the rotation. A couple of them had music featured in the Gameboys series, while others were suggested by Apple Music and Tik Tok lol. But after listening to all of them, I couldn’t help but want to share them with you!
To see how and why all of this started, check out my last post about the Gameboys Universe Here😊
It started with this boy group, SB19 (Soundbreak 19), and it’s 5 members Pablo, Stell, Ken, Justin, and Josh. They debuted in 2018 and were trained for 4 years by ShowBT Philippines, beginning in 2016. SB19 is the first Filipino and Southeast Asian act to be nominated in Billboard Music Awards for the Top Social Artist category, and to enter the top 10 of Billboard Social 50 weekly and year-end charts. The group promotes its music as part of Pinoy pop (P-pop)—a popular sub-genre of Original Pilipino Music.
I had heard of them prior to hearing their song “Hanggang Sa Huli” during Gameboys Season 1. But I had never really investigated them and their music. After I finished watching all things Gameboys, I started my research, and I am officially a fan. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing more from them.
Here is their most recent single “WYAT (Where You At)”…
Zack Tabudlo is a singer, songwriter, and musician. He began his musical career in 2018 before he rose to fame in 2020 when he joined MCA Music (now UMG Philippines) through sub-label Island Records Philippines. Zack’s debut single “Nangangamba” was released in 2020. His song “Binibini”, released in 2021, broke a record as the top local song on Spotify’s Philippines charts.
I found him by Shazam-ing a part during the Gameboys Movie, finding his song “Iyong Iyo”. And honestly, this was one of the most intimate moments between Cai and Gav, so every time I hear this song, I can’t help but picture that scene. Then I decided to keep going and came across some of his more recent music.
This boy group was formed in 2020 by Viva Artist Agency and Ninuno Media, and consists of six members: Taneo, Mo, Jao, Tomas, R-Ji and Alas. The group distinguishes itself as a multilingual and multiethnic boy band that sings in seven Philippine languages. Alamat debuted on February 14, 2021 with their first single, “kbye”. They currently hold the distinction of being the second P-pop group to make it on Billboard chart and the fastest-rising Pinoy act on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart, debuting at #2.
I came across Alamat while scrolling on TikTok, originally coming across fans talking about them before seeing their official page. Their recent single “Say You Love Me” drew me in, which led to me finding their album. I’ve been in love ever since. They are so young, and extremely talented.
Instead of putting the very sexy music video for “Say You Love Me”, I wanted to focus on their beautiful vocals…
The Juans are a pop rock band based in Bulacan, Philippines. It currently consists of lead vocalist and keyboardist Carl Guevarra, vocalist and lead guitarist Japs Mendoza, vocalist and bassist Chael Adriano, and vocalist and acoustic guitarist RJ Cruz. The Juans was initially categorized as a boy band, but the management team decided to recategorize them as a conventional band. They’ve unfortunately had several roster changes within the group, but in March of 2021, the group debuted on Billboard’s LyricFind Global charts.
This was a recommended discovery, courtesy of Apple Music. See that they were a band, instead of a singing/ dancing boy group, I was curious. They did not disappoint, and I am a fan of their style and music. It’s been nice to add them to my growing list of favorite new Filipino artists.
BGYO is a five-member boy group that was formed in 2018 and is composed of Akira, Gelo, JL, Mikki, and Nate. Acclaimed as the “Aces of P-pop” and the first Filipino Pop group to have their own topic on Twitter. After debuting in 2021 with their single The Light, BGYO released their first original soundtrack He’s Into Her which led to the group’s first major recognition, and made them the fifth Filipino artist to appear on the weekly Billboard Next Big Sound chart. The group’s first multi-lingual studio album The Light became the longest consecutive charting album by a Filipino act to stay at number one on iTunes Philippines of all time.
I came across BGYO on Instagram, in a picture with SB19, I believe. Then I saw a clip of one of their videos, so I had to see more LOL. A couple of videos, and an album, later, I was a fan. There is more music from them, for me to discover, but so far, I love what I am seeing and hearing. This has been a fun experience for me.
Kokoy De Santos
And you know I couldn’t forget about my Kokoy’s music releases 😊 He has two singles available on most streaming platforms. One is called “Lagi Lagi” and other is “Selos”; the second one is my favorite. And I also love watching his TikToks, where he does a lot of dance challenges, dancing being another one of his many talents.
(And his Vlogs on Youtube are adorable too!)
