And we’re back! I honestly miss doing this and really getting to dive into my favorite music. I was posting here and there on TikTok and sharing my favorite new releases on Instagram. But I really wanted to go back to where I started, doing music reviews 🙂
What better way to get back to it than with a new Monsta X EP ‘The Phase’!
Monsta X – The Phase EP
The first song and lead single on this EP is called “Magic”. I was hooked from the teasers! Now, I will say, that the album concept teaser videos confused me lol. I don’t think any of the fans fully understood where they were going with this one.
But now that it’s out and we have the first music video, it makes sense (kind of lol). I see the chaos and the music is still very hard-hitting, especially compared to their softer and more Pop leaning English language album ‘Unfold’ that came out earlier this year. The vocals and their presence are very strong. And we’re back to the OG Monsta X concept.
It all just makes me excited for this tour. I still don’t know what we’re going to get. I DO know that we are getting solo/ unit stages which I am always excited for. Their solo/ unit music always deserves their shine.
Let’s Talk The Tracklist…
- “Magic” – Another hit from Dem Jointz! Right away, the chorus is super catchy and I really am in love with the line “They call it tragic, we call it magic”. The song is about the attraction between two people, to put it simply. Honestly, I love when they experiment and have fun with sounds and concepts.
- “Type X” – This definitely has Joohoney written all over it (he did put in alot of work on this EP – check the credits ;)). It reminds me of his last solo project but made to fit the group. My favorite line: “Call me one hunnid, sweetheart, honey” – Joohoney 🙂
- “Survivor” – I’ll call this a VERY Monsta X song. One of their cockier songs, showing that they are who they say they are, and been doing this! Joohoney’s rap verse on here is insane! I love Hyungwon on the hook and my favorite line is : “Behind the horizon I’m taking my place. Witness the glory, the power, the grace”. Also “Monsta X until we die”.
- “Electric Heart” – A very grown and sexy R&B song. Joohoney has a part where he’s speaking in English but the part that gets me is his vocals that come before that around the 1:20 mark. The background music is definitely a 90s R&B sample.
- “That’s My Girl” – This one gives me 90s boyband vibes. It’s a Pop/R&B track with a catchy hook. The guys sound amazing on it.
- “Sweet Night, Sweet Morning” – A softer, almost Pop/ Country type song. It reminds me of the songs on ‘Unfold’. It changes the pace of the EP but the more I listen to it, the more I see that it’s something they’ve always done to end to an EP or album. Something sweet for Monbebe 🙂
Final Thoughts!
I’ve been a fan for about 7 years and I still never know what we’ll get when they drop new music. But that’s why I love them so much. It’s always something new but further confirms who and what they are. They still aren’t put in those serious boy group conversations enough for me, but the fans know how special they are and the impact they’ve had.
It’s not about who’s better than who, it’s acknowledging that the talent and presence is there, and an impact was made. I honestly think that’s more of a toxic fan argument. There are fans like me out there who aren’t afraid to give flowers to groups outside of our Favs. The “wars” have typically been between the “fans” and not the groups themselves.
But that’s a discussion for another day 🙂
