Fan-Girl Update! Harry Styles Finally Makes Solo Debut!

It’s Hump Day! And as always, I am beyond excited to do a Fan-Girl update for you guys, especially when it comes to one of my favorite (former) boy band members. Following artists like this who come out of a situation like that and are finally venturing out on their own is interesting. We get to see them come into their own as a person and as a musician. Being able to see their true musical influences come out is exciting.

The Single & Album Announcement

So, Harry released his first single called “Sign of the Times” last Friday (April 14th). It is over 5 minutes long and an instant classic. You can definitely hear his Pop/ Rock influences. The song style is reminiscent of Mick Jagger, The Beatles, and Elton John.

I really love the song though. I even had a very fun and interesting conversation with a friend of mine about this song. We both agreed that it’s one of those rock ballads that you could see live and hold up a lighter for. It could be that song with the big stage presence and pyrotechnics. But Harry has always been such a little rock star so this song doesn’t surprise me.

Also, on top of the fact that Harry released a powerful first single, he announced the date for this debut album. The album is self-titled and will be released next month, on May 12th. It’s already available for pre-order and the hype is definitely building. I, personally, am so excited for this and for him. I’m pre-ordering it as we speak.

Harry Shows Off Acting Skills on SNL

To make Harry’s solo debut a little sweeter, he was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday (April 15th). First he performed his new single “Sign of the Times” and sounded amazing. I missed his facial expressions and movements he makes while singing. Then he performed “Ever Since New York” while playing guitar. That song kind of kept the same Soft Rock vibe but still different .

On top of being the musical guest, he was in a couple of skits. He was in the Celebrity Family Feud skit where he played Mick Jagger (of course he was). The next skit he was in was where he played a soldier. He was a able to do a little singing in this one because they were working on a “catchy hook” to their song by the fire LOL (look it up on YouTube).

Rolling Stone Cover Boy

And for the cherry on top to the introduction of Harry Styles’ solo career, he is featured in Rolling Stone magazine. The article is about things that they (we) learned about Harry from his solo debut. The discussion went from how he decided on the title of the album to what he loves to sing about. That last part is what makes me love and appreciate him that much more.

He admitted that he loves to sing about LOVE, saying:

“The one subject that hits the hardest is love, whether it’s platonic, romantic, loving it,gaining it, losing it … it always hits you hardest,” he said in his RS interview. “I don’t think people want to hear me talk about going to bars, and how great everything is. The champagne popping … who wants to hear about it? I don’t want to hear my favorite artists talk about all the amazing shit they get to do. I want to hear, ‘How did you feel when you were alone in that hotel room, because you chose to be alone?'”

My Final Thoughts

I honestly cannot wait to hear the full album! Even though people are saying that his music will be unfamiliar to those who followed him in One Direction, I don’t believe it. They could be mainly talking about his younger fans though. But I could see it then, especially with the last One Direction album. You can tell that Harry heavily influenced the direction (no pun intended) on that album.

All 4 boys are very talented and can a lot of great things either together or separately. Zayn has made a big name for himself and is working on album #2. Niall and Louis have both released charting singles that got rave reviews. And Liam has been hinting at new music while posting pictures of him in the studio with amazing producers (Pharrell Williams). I just need their Directioner fans to be happy and supportive whether they decided to reunite or not.
