Music Review! Zayn Makes His Solo Debut with New Album Mind of Mine!

I am coming to you from a place of pure bliss right now. I currently have Zayn Malik’s Mind of Mine album on repeat and I am just… in AWE.

Where do I even start?! With the teasing of “Pillowtalk”, “It’s You”, “Like I Would”, and “BeFour” prior to the album’s release on Friday 3/25 (the Anniversary of his departure from 1D by the way) we thought we were getting a good idea of where the album was going to go. But that was only partially true. I knew it was going to be good but every song ignited a new vibe and feeling. I wish I could have recorded my reaction when I first started listening to this album. I felt like… You know the EMOJI with the heart eyes? Well that was me. And I was listening as I was traveling to work and finished listening at my desk. I can only imagine how crazy I looked LOL…

Let’s talk about the songs now before I get even more carried away…

Just a few things I want to point out… 1st of all, something I didn’t know until I saw an article and some of his dedicated fans explain… He has an interlude called “Flower” which is 1 minute and 44 seconds of Zayn singing in his Father’s native language, Urdu. His father is English-Pakistani (If I am wrong, please forgive me and let me know). People have been wanting Zayn to show more of his heritage, religion, etc… I am not completely familiar with the language or the culture but the interlude is BEAUTIFUL.

Also, he has a song with Kehlani called “Wrong”. I really do like the song even though I am not a huge fan of Kehlani like many others seem to be. Don’t get me wrong, she is pretty and talented. But I just don’t believe the hype right now. She sounds great with Zayn on this song though and she is someone that he said he wanted to work with so, good for him for actually getting that opportunity. Now he just has to make that Bruno Mars collaboration happen 🙂

The rest of the album consists of beautiful old soul ballads, some “new wave” tracks, and slow and up tempo songs worthy of anyone’s sex playlist. Zayn really shows off his vocal range and I am still blown away. You can even go back to his songs with 1D and hear how powerful his voice already was. I hope to see him live one day so I can hear that amazing voice in person.

I can’t promise how I would be seeing him live, though, because the Fan Girl in me from my NSYNC days tends to come out when I see or hear Zayn. I will try to behave myself though…

But for now, I just look forward to watching him perform on the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday, April 3rd at 8PM/ET !

Now, I am not sure how some of his 1D followers along with people who probably couldn’t stand 1D are really taking in this album. I have already seen articles of people who think he’s trying too hard but I feel like if you just listen to him sing, ignoring everything before this point, then you may see him in a different light. Of course, he is going to spend his 1st solo album trying to find himself and his sound. When you spend 5 years singing music your heart isn’t 100% into, what do you expect? He’s still growing up so let him grow and soon his music will make sense to those of you who may not get it yet.

Below is a video of Zayn’s performing “Like I Would” LIVE on Jimmy Fallon, on Friday 3/25/16… The day Mind of Mine was released 🙂
