Music Review! Drake Drops His New 2 Sided Project Scorpion

Happy Thursday ! Even though a lot of music was released recently, I am still digesting Drake’s new album from almost 2 weeks ago. And if you check social media, I’m not the only one. Also, I like to put together quality reviews so for some albums, I take a bit longer to do a write up. It doesn’t help that Scorpion is 25 tracks with a “Side A” and “Side B”, a Rap side and an R&B side LOL.

Scorpion… My Review

I’ve been a fan of Drake for a good while and I don’t feel like Drake needs too much of an introduction so I decided against putting a bio or anything here. I’m pretty sure that most of you are familiar with him and/ or his music, whether you’re a fan or not. If you aren’t familiar then go and check him out. I’ll post his social media handles below if ya’ll are curious 🙂

Side A

This is the Hip Hop/ Rap side of the album. Listening to some of the songs he’s been releasing lately, including the ones on this album, it seems like he may me taking some notes from the younger generation. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you can tell by the simple yet catchy flows and beat patterns. It’s pretty evident in tracks like “Nonstop”, “I’m Upset”, and “Mob Ties”.

I’m not really mad at it, though, and actually like those songs; “I’m Upset” has really grown on me from when I first heard it. I love the “dramatic” music element in “Elevate”, as well as the Gospel, “Take you to church” harmonies in “Emotionless”. But what I think I appreciate the most is that we get some of that old Drake (The mixtapes, and even Take Care, Nothing Was the Same) tracks too. I get those feelings from “8 out of 10” and “Is There More”, that has the Aaliyah sample, for sure.

Side B

And this is the R&B side of the album, starting with the track “Peak”. Of course I have to start with “Nice For What” because that is a definite favorite; with the Lauryn Hill sample, NOLA bounce influence, Big Freedia feature, and the video showing love to the ladies, it’s hard not to love it. “That’s How You Feel” has a dope bounce to it even though it’s not fully uptempo, and I love the hook. Now with “In My Feelings”, we get that New Orleans bounce again with a little Lil Wayne sample. And I’m sure that most of you have seen the dance challenge that has come about because of this song (I kind of want to learn it LOL).

Then we get to one of the few songs that I had actually liked before the rest of the album grew on me, “Don’t Matter to Me” which features the late Michael Jackson. Out of probably all of the features, this one is probably my favorite, but I’ve been a Michael Jackson fan forever so, anything with his voice on it is special. And lastly, I really love “After Dark” with Static Major and Ty Dolla Sign. This song is a REAL R&B record, in my opinion, keeping everything simple and smooth, and it’s appreciated.

Final Thoughts!

I, honestly, started having only a few favorite songs, other than the radio singles that were released prior to this album coming out. Now, I’ve been jamming the entire album and could care less about the mixed reviews, even though I was one of those at first. I guess I should’ve known better, I’ve been a Drake fan for a minute so why would I switch up now. Regardless of what’s being said about him and his music, he still finds a way to win; check the Billboard charts and the streaming records that he’s broken…
