Did Sweet Sexy Savage Kehlani Finally Win Me Over?

My Thoughts on Kehlani

Before we get into this music/ album review of Kehlani’s new album Sweet Sexy Savage, I have to admit that when it comes to her, I have been a pretty tough critic on this 21 year old singer/ songwriter. I have always respected her as an artist, though. I just wasn’t impressed, personally. She was one of those artists whose music was so hyped up and was labeled the next big thing according to everyone. It made the expectations too high and I just couldn’t see it.

When she went through that horrible public breakup, was ridiculed, and tried to end her life, I did come to her defense. At that time, I was no longer looking at her as a musician but as a fellow female who was going through a rough time. At the end of the day, she’s human, has feelings, and gets hurt when people bully her. We’ve all been there, just may have handled it differently.

Check out her most recent interview with Ness Nitty where she talks about being trolled and body-shamed on social media…

I have actually been keeping up with her on social media since then. She’s pretty fun to watch and seems like a pretty chill and genuine person. So, with her debut studio album coming out, I really wanted to give her a chance. I definitely went into this with new ears and an open heart and mind.

My Review

Let me start this review by saying that this album definitely lives up to its title Sweet Sexy Savage. At first, I thought the title was a little corny, nothing personal with her. But after hearing the album it makes a lot of sense. It was obviously meant to describe Kehlani on this journey she has been on. But it also describes the lyrical content of her songs.

But it looks like it has finally happened folks. I can honestly say that I am a fan of this album. I will still be honest and say that it doesn’t give me chills or anything like some of my real favorite records. Will I jam this in the car or when I just need some good music to listen to? Absolutely!

Some favorite tracks right now, other than her first 2 singles “CRZY” and “Distraction” are: “Keep On”, “Piece of Mind”, and “Personal”. I basically love the first 8 songs without a doubt. The rest of the tracks will take some more listening to for me. The album as a whole, from start to finish, is put together beautifully. Every song flows and nothing sounds the same, which is great.

I don’t even want to make a list of songs that I’m not quite into. With this album, I feel like whatever songs I’m unsure about right now, I will probably start liking them the more I listen to them. This has nothing to do with Kehlani herself, it’s just the vibe of the album. It’s one of those records that you have to keep listening to in order to feel what she’s feeling. I may not be able to relate to every song but sometimes I can still connect to the artists once I recognize the emotions behind the songs.

She has been getting a lot of attention with this album since it was released and I cannot be mad at it. The fact that she sticks to her guns and isn’t afraid to show the world who she is, is a beautiful thing. I really do admire her for that. Finding female artists that I truly enjoy has been rough for me since most of them are either super feminists or over sexualized. Kehlani as a young woman and artist is more balanced and it’s refreshing.
