I told myself that I was going to stop posting reviews on the blog from now until the end of the year, mainly posting on my IG page. But I still have enough 2018 left before I do my “end of the year” stuff, right? Also, when it comes to certain artists/ music, I usually have more than enough to say for a blog post LOL. And since Zayn decided to drop a 27-track album on Friday, this post is pretty much necessary 🙂
It’s nice to be able to focus on Zayn and his music again. I really don’t like talking about an artist’s personal life but some have more out there than others, and he definitely has. I’m sure many of you have seen his transition from mega boy-band member to solo artist, dealing with is anxiety, his love life, his religion, and other pursuits. And with that said , I will only be focusing on this album, Icarus Falls and it’s 27 tracks, so there’s plenty to talk about…
Icarus Falls… My Review
Now, let me start by saying that this is NOT his first album, Mind of Mine. That album as a debut was amazing but I am glad that he has grown so much musically and it sounds like he had more freedom on this one. I could tell by the singles (and videos) that he released before the album: “Let Me”, “Sour Diesel”, “No Candle, No Light” featuring Nicki Minaj, “Entertainer”, “Fingers”, and “Too Much” featuring Timbaland. My favorites being “Let Me”, “Fingers”, and “Too Much” for sure.
Being that this is Zayn, I always look for those songs like hook me in right away, so those are the ones that I will talk about more right now. And to be honest, I found myself gravitating towards the more R&B/ Soul-laced tracks (less Pop elements). One of those tracks is “Natural”, which is funny because, it reminds me of Mind of Mine a little bit. I also feel that way about the next 2 songs, “Back to Life” and “Common”.
Then we get to 2 of my real favorites, “Imprint” and “Stand Still”, which I feel are some pretty strong songs on this album. One is a little more upbeat than the other, but I just love his voice and the melodies on these 2. This is the side of Zayn I look forward to hearing. Another serious favorite of mine is “Satisfaction” which is much slower but the chorus and the music slows down just right, and his voice comes through beautifully.
Some more R&B-type favorites of mine are “If I Got You”, “There You Are”, and “Insomnia”. I did find one that gives me that slow, drawn out melody, almost like “It’s You” from Mind of Mine; it’s called “Scripted”. I do enjoy the album as a whole, even if it is A LOT of music. I’m just really happy for him that he got to put something so free this time around 🙂
