Music Review! Blackbear Gives Us a Treat on Cyber Monday with New Album ‘Cybersex’

Normally, because of who this is, I would do a Music Crush post but I just wasn’t feeling it this time. And I want to give other people that shine for a while. For those of you who have followed me so far, you know that I love me some Blackbear (aka Daddy LOL), no matter what. He is still a favorite and probably always will be but I want this post to mainly talk about this most recent album. This is going to interesting for sure; especially since he dropped one of the songs on the porn site PornHub.

I had actually forgotten that his album was coming out this week; mainly because he released it on a Tuesday instead of a Friday. Other than that, it’s taking me a little longer to digest this album especially because of all of the unique features he has. Also, after watching Bear on his social media and some of the craziness (normal for him) that he posts, the music on this record doesn’t really surprise me. Keep reading to see what I’m talking about 🙂

Cybersex… What Do I Really Think?

Before I go into this review, for fans of Blackbear (like myself) or those of you who are thinking about checking out this album; get rid of whatever assumptions you may have. You have to go into it with an open mind. It’s not even that you will be disappointed or anything because Blackbear is one of those artists that can stay true to himself while still adapting to current trends. He really does blow my mind every time because of that.

As far as the features go, my favorites are his songs with Lil Aaron, Machine Gun Kelly, and FRND. I like “Playboy S**t” featuring Lil Aaron, even though I still don’t love all of the auto-tune on everything. “E.Z.” featuring Machine Gun Kelly is a favorite because I love MGK and he fits the song perfectly. “Anxiety” featuring FRND is a great track, though I have never heard of FRND before but I love this song and the vibe that they bring to it.

I’m a little on the fence about “Top Priority” featuring Ne-Yo, simple because of the fact that I don’t feel the same about Ne-Yo as I used to, being that I have been a fan since the beginning of his career. The other features are okay but I just didn’t like them as much as I thought I would, especially the songs with T-Pain and Paul Wall. My least favorite feature is Tinashe on “Up in This” and I am not completely sure why; nothing deep about it, I just don’t like it. I honestly feel like he could’ve done with half of the features that he has on this album.

The first two songs had me unsure if I was even going to like this album, to be honest; they’re the more Emo/ Rock/ Trap sounding songs (featuring 2 Chainz and Cam’ron). Then in the next 3 songs you get a little bit of that old Blackbear sound mixed with a little Pop/ Dance (because of the Tenashe feature). The next 3 songs remind me a lot of his last album, Digital Druglord, which was definitely nice to hear. The rest of the record has a lot of R&B elements which I really do love, whether or not I love the features.

Final Thoughts!

Overall, the album as a whole is not bad. I do have my favorites that I will probably listen to more than the others. But, knowing me, the songs I am not too sure about will probably grow on me. I still love hearing Bear’s voice and can’t wait to see what tracks he decides to make videos for.

It does make it a bit more difficult to write about an album I haven’t fallen in love with, especially when it’s by one of my favorite artists. But, it is a good thing to learn how to share my true feelings while still respecting the artist and their creativity. We all have different taste and listen to music differently. This blog is only MY opinion so if you enjoy something that I don’t or hate something that I love then it’s all good. I encourage you guys to share your thoughts on the music that I do write about.

Let’s start a conversation!
