What’s up you guys?! I am happy to be back with another fun post story-time. With everything that’s been happening lately, especially my recent concert experience, I thought it was only right to dedicate a post to my fan-girls. I know I am not the only one and I even turned my best friend into one recently LOL. As common as it, I still feel like people don’t really get what a Fan-girl is or why some of us are the way that we are about artists.
In true fan-girl fashion, I am listening to my Boy-band station on Pandora as I am writing this 🙂 It was only right since that is what started it all for me. This is the music that made me feel better about being who I was. It inspired and encouraged me to be creative.
What is a Fan-Girl?
I was going to find a legit definition of the term “fan-girl” but most of the ones that I found are derogatory and insulting. Not all “fan girls” are teenagers or are obsessive, guy obsessed stalkers. Yes, in many cases there is an obsession over a particular person, celebrity, musician, etc… But, like in my case, it’s just a person (fan) who admires a celebrity or musician and has a genuine respect for them and their artistry.
There are so many different types of fan-girls out there. To me, there is no age limit. I mean, maybe there should be a restriction on the behavior of an older fan-girl in some situations, though. But other than that, I think it’s all in good fun, especially when you truly appreciate what that person is doing.
New Generation Fandoms & Fan-Girls
This is a very interesting topic for me. Lately I have been paying a lot of attention to this generation of fans, fan-girls, and fandoms. A fandom is basically a group of fans who belong to a particular person, celebrity, group, musicians, etc… They typically have nicknames: Zayn has “Zsquad”, One Direction has “Directioners”, and Alex Aiono has the “Aiono Army”… You get the point. We also have “stans” which is basically another word for fan-girling/ supporting someone.
Most of the time it’s girls trying to get attention from their favorites and them getting excited when it actually happens. Then you have the ones who are rude and mean but just to get attention. Sometimes the person plays along and other times they call them out but the “fan” is still getting attention so they won. I don’t understand it though.
I don’t like when those rude or aggressive fans get more attention than the calmer fans. It may just be a trend right now but it’s still not cool. But being that I am older and a lot of my favorite people are younger than me, I watch from a distance. I do interact every now and then but I am not forcing it or overdoing it just to get attention. I definitely appreciate the attention that I do get but it’s because I am just being myself.
Why I Was & Still Am a Fan-Girl?
I think that it’s safe to say that I truly started being a fan-girl around the time NSYNC was out and continued with other boy-bands. I was a fan of plenty of other artists before them but this was different. I knew everything about them: full names, family members’ names, favorite things, etc… I bought every piece of music they released. Whatever magazine they were in or on the cover of I had it. Their posters were all over my wall. And I went to as many concerts as I could (thanks to my mom of course).
But all of that was the obsessive side of me being a fan-girl. I had much deeper reasons for loving them as much as I did. So, I was a fan of them through mainly elementary school and junior high. I continued to be a Justin Timberlake fan through high-school and am still a fan today.
I was a very nervous kid and was picked on pretty bad during that period of my life. Listening to NSYNC was my sanity and made me feel better about myself. It gave me a temporary escape from the harsh reality that was my life at the time. To most people, it may not seem like much, but it meant the world to me.
Final Thoughts
I could go on and on about this topic but I will end it on this final note. Being able to connect with a person or artist on a deep level is an amazing feeling. The fact that I have been able to do that since I was young is a beautiful thing. If it wasn’t for those feelings, I wouldn’t have felt inspired to start this blog. The music and artists that I like get me through my roughest days, even though most of them will never know that.

I definitely associate myself with being a fan-girl for different artists, although as you said, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that this comes out in different ways now than it used to when I was younger. I think it’s awesome that you were able to connect with NSYNC’s music so deeply growing up, and that helped you get through being picked on (I’m so sorry you had to go through that!).
